In the wider context of the "European Green Deal'" strategy and as part of the "Coal Regions in Transition" (CRiT) initiative the European Commission launched in November 2021 "exchangeEU", an exchange programme for EU coal, lignite, peat, and oil shale (coal+) regions in transition. The multidisciplinary programme aims at addressing the needs and challenges of practitioners in these regions as well as facilitating an innovative exchange and peer-to-peer learning between them. It matches stakeholders from coal+ regions in the EU and creates a unique opportunity for sharing insights, dialogue, cooperation, learning and exchange of experiences and good practices in areas such as clean energy transition, regional development and economic diversification, transition governance and strategy, project implementation and finance, effects on social fabric and community and infrastructure and sight sustainability.
A consortium led by Guidehouse and including ifok, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and Wuppertal Institute is supporting the European Commission with the design, development and implementation of the exchangeEU programme. The role of the Wuppertal Institute consists in providing scientific advice and supporting the facilitation of the exchange process.
