Integrated Overall Concept for Aix-la-Chapelle to be Climate Neutral in 2030

  • Project no.253021
  • Duration 06/2023 - 12/2023

The city of Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) has set itself the goal of becoming climate neutral by 2030. In order to achieve this goal, the Wuppertal Institute, together with Gertec Ingenieurgesellschaft GmbH, is creating the integrated overall concept Aachen climate-neutral 2030. This concept is intended as a continuation of the Integrated Climate Protection Concept for Aachen (IKSK) to adapt the strategic orientation to the goal of climate neutrality up to Concrete proposals for measures for the consumption sectors relevant in Aachen for the period 2025 up to 2030.

The overall concept is based on different, differentiated foundations. The heating sector has already been worked out in relatively concrete terms. However, there is a lack of concrete strategies for transformation in the consumption, nutrition, lifestyles and circular economy sectors. The areas of land use and mobility must also be integrated.
In this respect, the integrated overall concept also has the function of further developing existing strategies, closing gaps and merging processes. The task of the Wuppertal Institute is to work on the field of mobility.

For this area of action, transport climate protection measures are to be developed in close cooperation with the planners responsible for mobility in the Aachen municipality, the implementation of measures that falls under municipal responsibility and with the implementation of which the city of Aachen can make its contribution to a climate-neutral mobility system.
