How can a long-term and risk-minimising energy strategy which protects the climate and natural resources and at the same time creates jobs and drives the economy be realised? This is a challenge where international cooperation is more important than ever. As leading industrialised nations, Germany and Japan have a special responsibility to take the lead for implementing the Paris Agreement and to contribute as much as possible to a global deep decarbonisation pathway.

The German-Japanese Energy Transition Council (GJETC) was founded in May 2016, in order to work on strategic and systemic analysis to develop policy advice for new and long-term perspectives on the way to an ambitious energy transition. In its second phase (2018-2020), the GJETC put a focus on the topics of a hydrogen society and digitalisation with regard to the energy transition. The studies analyse the similarities and differences in both countries, the opportunities and challenges, and derived policy conclusions and recommendations. At the outreach event of GJETC in Berlin, the co-chairs and members of the GJETC will share the results and recommendations of this second phase and discuss it with the audience.

Dr. Stefan Thomas, Director of the Energy Policy in the Energy, Transport and Climate Policy Division, and Prof. Dr. Jun Arima, University of Tokyo will present the key findings of the GJETC from 2018 to 2020. Prof. Dr. Peter Hennicke (Senior Advisor at the Wuppertal Institute and GErman GJETC Co-Chair) will give a lecture on the GJETC as a role model for bilateral cooperation and future perspectives. The Outreach event will end after a panel discussion on how international cooperation can support the energy transition to decarbonisation and sustainable development.

The event language is German and Japanese (Silmultan translation). The event is organised by the Wuppertal Institute, IEE Japan, ECOS, Hennicke Consult and is funded by The German Federal Foundation Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt, DBU) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. The registration is possible until 13 March 2020 under the link below.
