International Energy Policy Required

Climate compatible energy supply is not enough to overcome challenges

  • News 26.02.2019

Many of the current challenges in the field of energy supply have an international dimension or can only be solved internationally. But an "international energy policy" today is only informal - most of it is the downside of climate policy or the effect of change driven by the inevitable finiteness of regional sources.
Prof. Dr Manfred Fischedick, Vice-President of the Wuppertal Institute, and Dr Hans-Jochen Luhmann, Senior Expert at the Wuppertal Institute, introduce current developments in international climate policy in their article "International Energy Policy – Changes in the Last Decade", published in the Journal for Foreign and Security Policy, and discuss the remaining challenges.

As a result, the authors show that the impending change towards an energy supply from climate-friendly sources will not lead to a "Golden Age": The scarcity characteristic, which in the case of oil can lead to fabulous wealth and brutal wars as examples, will not disappear completely as a result of the transition to energy from renewable sources – it will be shifted to metals. In order to alleviate these problems, it will be necessary to focus on the common will to find solutions. An "international energy policy" is needed.
