Climate Protection in the Integrated Urban Development

  • Project no.1241
  • Duration 12/2008 - 12/2009

Also for cities and municipalities, the pressure to develop and implement climate protection measures has risen markedly over the last years. The target of the project "Climate Protection in Integrated Urban Development in Northrhine Westphalia" was the development of an action guideline in order to provide information and assistance for interested municipalities about the implementation of integrated climate protection measures in city development. The project has been funded by the Ministry for Building and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and conducted by the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy and the Research Institute for Regional and Urban Development (ILS). Target group of the guideline are particularly municipal actors of the city planning and urban development.
By an analysis of municipal concepts for climate protection in North Rhine-Westphalia and other important German municipalities, possibilities for the content-related, procedural and conceptual integration, as well as best practices have been presented in detail. These analyses have been supplemented by qualitative interviews with municipal actors in the fields of planning and environmental planning, as well as with regional institutions. The analyses served as the basis for the definition of requirements and standards of holistic municipal climate protection strategies.
