Technological innovations are insufficient when it comes to considerably reduce the current use of natural resources. A complementary and equally valued strategy is needed to achieve a substantial reduction: Consumer goods have to be used over a longer period of time, services supporting collaborative consumption (CC) patterns must be extended.
Objectives of the study were to
1.) describe the resource saving potentials of CC patterns.
2.) name key points of a communication strategy that promotes the idea and models of CC.
3.) develop recommendations for politics and other sectors as well as identifying further research questions.
The project included the following working packages (WPs):
WP 1: Overview of (selection) the whole range of CC models (in cooperation with the NABU).
WP 2: Certain case studies were selected and examined regarding their actual resource consumption and their resource saving potential along the following questions:
- Which CC models have the highest resource saving potential?
- Do these models cause an actual reduction in the absolute use of resources and are there any rebound effects to be expected?
WP 3: The most relevant key points of a communication strategy were identified based on eight interviews, promoting the idea and models of CC and improving its overall image. This step included the identification of target group orientated concepts and promising communication channels, such as campaigning.
WP 4: The results of the project were presented and discussed in an expert workshop in order to discuss the possibilities and options for political strategies for CC.
The project results are published in a paper series "Ökologie" of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung. This project report shows the key results from all WPs, gives recommendations and shows the need for further research. It is available online (in German).
