Economic Instruments for Climate Protection

Second German-Japanese Workshop on Economic Instruments for Climate Protection

  • Project no.1700
  • Duration 12/2006 - 03/2007

On 31 January and 1 February 2007, the Wuppertal Institute organised the "Second German-Japanese Workshop on Economic Instruments" together with the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) from Japan. The workshop was co-financed by the German and Japanese Environment Ministries as a follow-up to a first conference and workshop realised in Tokyo, Japan, at the end of 2005.
The workshop in Berlin concentrated on emissions trading. The Japanese and German participants from politics, business, NGOs and science first discussed the experiences made with the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and their relevance for any attempt to set up a similar system in Japan. On the second day, the participants explored the linking potentials of the ETS with other instruments like Joint Implementation (JI) and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) as well as with other emerging trading systems in Norway, Switzerland or Canada. The workshop program, the documentation and the presentations of the participants (in English) can be downloaded.
