In the context of the New Urban Agenda, which was endorsed at Habitat III/World Urban Forum in Quito, the project analyses the status and significance of environmental issues in urban development in six countries - China, India, Russia, Brazil, South Africa, and Indonesia - and identifies relevant problems and challenges in the countries. It carries out the national debate on environmental concerns at the urban level, legislation and policy measures. The project also focuses on selected cities/metropolitan region in the respective country and analyses the local plans, programmes and policy documents in order to find out local priorities, the local context of those priorities, local measures and their effects. It also aims to find out how smart approaches from the study can be transferred to Germany and vice versa, and to feed recommendations into the international arenas.
