Bioökonomie 4.0

Visions of a Digital and Participarory Forest Management Practice and Wood Use

  • Project no.451082
  • Duration 10/2017 - 03/2020

A bio-based economy is important for the transition towards sustainable production and energy supply. Although some economical and ecological questions arise in the political debate, hardly any relevant societal discussions takes places on a wood-based bio-economy.

BMBF-funded project Bioökonomie 4.0 ("Bio-Economy 4.0") is working towards constructive societal debate about the design of a possible sustainable bio-economy based on a exemplary, purposeful connection between digitisation and bio-economy. The futuristic vision of a digital, block-chain managed, self-sufficient forestry that integrates society will yield a wide, stimulating and controversial debate about the bio-economy. To achieve this, a digital platform will be developed, based on scenarios developed with experts developed. The platform will inspire debate by informing targeted groups and motivating through playful elements. Furthermore, random samples will be drawn offline in so-called "ForestLabs". The participatory processes will be evaluated for effectiveness and whether they can be applied to other fields of participation research.

The Wuppertal Institute supports the project with long-standing experience in a sustainable bio-economy, the participatory development of assessment criteria, and by bringing the living-lab approach to the participatory concept.
