Preparation of a Study on the Use of Excess Power Generated by Renewables as well as the Potential for the Deployment of Heat and Coldstorage in Rhineland-Palatinate

  • Project no.251874
  • Duration 06/2019 - 12/2020

Excess power from the generation of wind energy can be used to generate (industrial) heat, for example via power-to-gas or power-to-heat technologies. In this context, efficient heat and cold storage and the production of green gas are also of interest. The Wuppertal Institute and the Office for Energy and Technical Planning GmbH (BET) are to investigate the potential of these approaches and how they can be used for the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

This "Flexibility Study Rhineland-Palatine" is commissioned by the Ministry of Environment, Energy, Food and Forestry of Rhineland-Palatine. With its preparation, two measures of the state’s climate protection concept are to be implemented: the "Utilisation Option for Wind Power Overcapacities" and the "Potential Study Heat and Cold Storage".

Basis of the study is the status quo of (renewable) energy generation, transport, distribution and consumption in Rhineland-Palatinate as well as the extrapolation and further development of the energy generation park and infrastructure until 2050, regarded in the context of overall evolution in Germany. The study aims to answer the following questions:

  • To which frequency and extent do positive and negative residual loads (difference between generated power and power demand) occur in Rhineland-Palatinate – viewed for various support years until 2050?
  • By which flexibility options and energy storage to be used in the areas of power-to-heat, power-to-gas, or power-to-methanol, can waste heat and load management measures be sensibly compensated?
  • How can a system optimisation of the lowest possible positive and negative residual load look like – viewed on an hourly level for a whole year for different support years until 2050?
  • Which recycling paths from the various possibilities for renewable electricity integration mentioned above are to prioritise – e.g. from an economic and ecological point of view, and in which order should they be arranged?
  • What contribution will the increased use of flexibility options make to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and to the achievement of climate protection goals?
  • What do the underlying business models and applications of the exploitation channels look like for the actors to implement?
  • By which political measures can existing obstacles in the implementation of these business models be removed?
