Mobility Stations in Urban Quarters – Further Development of Quarter-Based Mobility Stations and New Development of Quarter Hubs in the Model Area Elberfelder Nordstadt in Wuppertal

  • Project no.252621
  • Duration 11/2021 - 03/2023

Within the MiQ project, the project participants will investigate in a transdisciplinary way how the mobility of people in the district can be improved with the help of quarter-based mobility stations and quarter hubs. This should help to relieve the street space of motorised individual traffic and the strongly increasing motorised delivery traffic with its consequential problems for the quarter and its residents.

For this purpose, the researchers will develop, test and evaluate a model project in Wuppertal's Nordstadt (Ölberg and Mirke). The location search, the development of business models and the quarter communication will take place in a joint co-production process of all project participants with the involvement of other relevant actors (e.g. Wuppertal city administration). As part of the accompanying scientific research, the Wuppertal Institute examines the effects of the newly built mobility station and the quarter-hub (impact evaluation), while the University of Wuppertal carries out continuous process monitoring and analyses the success factors and obstacles (process evaluation).
The project participants will design, realise and evaluate a quarter-based mobility station as a spatially physical and digitally supported linking point for the means of transport of the environmental alliance and prepare a second mobility station, which is also to be realised, afterwards. They will also investigate how the mobility situation in the quarter can be improved by linking a quarter-based mobility station with a quarter hub that is supported from within the district, is independent of providers and covers all delivery services. It combines the two transport functions of mobility station and microdepot spatially, organisationally and operationally. The concept and operator model of the quarter hub are being developed in the project.

The project serves to support a change in transport accepted by the residents in the model quarter of Wuppertal's Nordstadt. Here, the mobility of the people in the quarter is to be improved and the local traffic load reduced. The results and insights gained in the model area will be tested for their structural generalisability. They serve as a blueprint for other quarters in Wuppertal, in the "Bergische Städtedreieck" and for other cities throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. From this, the researchers derive recommendations for action to initiate further quarter-based mobility stations and quarter hubs on a large scale.

The Wuppertal Institute is the consortium leader in this project and is responsible in particular for the scientific evaluation.
