The Krankenhausgesellschaft Nordrhein-Westfalen e. V. (KGNW) would like to take an important step towards a climate protection strategy in 2022 and encourage hospitals in North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW) to implement climate protection measures and become CO2-neutral. The Wuppertal Institute is drawing up a concept that concretises the options for the "target vision of a climate-neutral hospital".

The following three goals should be achieved by the short report:

• The KGNW board is shown how it can support the hospitals in NRW on their way towards climate neutrality and an implementation path is proposed.
• Hospital owners and managers are motivated to establish climate protection as an important corporate goal and are given concrete advice on measures to reduce CO2 emissions.
• An implementation strategy for CO2 reduction for NRW hospitals up to climate neutrality will be developed. This shows which measures are to be taken to achieve climate neutrality, how much they are likely to cost and what investment is required.
