Quantitative Impact Assessment for InnovationCity Ruhr – Bottrop Model City

  • Project no.252036
  • Duration 06/2020 - 06/2021

In 2010, the city of Bottrop won the competition "Climate City of the Future" organised by the Initiativkreis Ruhr. Since then, the city and its pilot area "InnovationCity Ruhr" is an experimental and laboratory site for climate-friendly urban redevelopment. The pilot area comprises a total of around 67,000 inhabitants, 22,000 jobs and 12,500 residential buildings. The aim is to reduce CO2 emissions in the pilot area by half compared to the initial value by 2020. In addition, InnovationCity Ruhr is to contribute to improving the quality of life and continue to make the region attractive for companies as a business location.

In order to achieve the project goals, over 300 individual measures were developed in the master plan and successively implemented. A monitoring and evaluation concept exists to assess the success of the InnovationCity project.
Based on this concept, the Wuppertal Institute prepares a final evaluation of the 10-year pilot project, determines the CO2 emissions saved since the start of the project and thus evaluates whether the project's goals have been achieved.
