Roadmap for Achieving Climate Neutrality by the year 2030 for Stadtentwässerungsbetriebe Köln

  • Project no.252807
  • Duration 03/2022 - 11/2022

In 2017, Stadtentwässerungsbetriebe Köln, AöR (StEB Köln) set itself the goal of being climate neutral by 2030. This initially relates to energy-related emissions. The vision Climate Protection and Energy 2030 also sets the goal that the StEB would like to be a pioneer for the further development and application of future-proof innovative technologies and make an active contribution to the development of decentralised energy concepts.

Numerous analyses and strategy consideration are required to achieve this ambitious goal. The path to decarbonisation at the StEB is being taken via the three scopes of energy-related operational activities, purchased energy sources (electricity, heating, cooling), as well as purchased fuels, including GHG-relevant emissions. By 2035, process-related emissions are also to be included in the net zero target.
To achieve the goal of climate neutrality, however, further measures are required, for which the company would like to involve external consultants for support. The goal is to identify fields of action in various thematic workshops together with the StEB and to identify projects that make an important contribution to climate neutrality (e.g. heating, cooling, electricity efficiency, business mobility, energy use and reduction of waste and sewage sludge, procurement). The result will be a roadmap by the end of 2022, which will show StEB the way to climate neutrality and which can serve as a model for other companies in the sector.

In addition to the Wuppertal Institute, the Research Institute for Water and Waste Management at the RWTH Aachen University (FiW) e. V. and the Association for the Economical Use of Energy and Water (ASEW) are also involved in the consortium.
