Modular Stage Zero

  • Project no.452912
  • Duration 03/2023 - 12/2024

Important factors in the production of sustainable music theatre and at the same time continues an old tradition: even in the Baroque, set designs were often refurbished and reused.
With the project "Modular Stage Zero", the Wuppertaler Bühnen und Sinfonieorchester GmbH is now setting the foundation for a permanent sustainable stage practice, the core of which will be the development of a reusable modular stage design.

Based on aspects of circular design, the modular stage will be used and publicly promoted in five opera productions between 2023 and 2025. The challenge of the new system will be to create a single, transformable, modular structure for several productions without presenting the audience with a stage set that always looks the same. The opera house will collaborate with scientists from the Wuppertal Institute to develop and evaluate the module system. Further planned measures concerning the material supply chains of costume and equipment, the mobility of project participants and audience members as well as the stage technology will also be accompanied by the researchers of the Wuppertal Institute.

The project is funded by the Zero programme of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation). Funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien).
