Regional Material Flow Analysis for the District of Euskirchen as a Basis for Recommendations for Action Towards a Circular Economy

  • Project no.353258
  • Duration 11/2023 - 06/2024

As part of its economic development concept, the district of Euskirchen is creating a "Sustainable Innovation Hub" in the Alte Tuchfabrik in Euskirchen. The hub, which will open in November 2023 and is called "Ideenfabrik Nachhaltige Wirtschaft" (Ideas Factory Sustainable Economy), is intended to play a central role in promoting the sustainable transformation of companies in the district of Euskirchen. As part of the Ideas Factory, companies will, for example, have the opportunity to develop prototype innovations in the existing workshop. The Ideas Factory will also offer seminars and workshops on topics such as innovation, sustainable corporate transformation and future analyses.

A central focus of the Ideas Factory is the transformation of the regional economy into a circular economy. The district of Euskirchen has therefore commissioned the Wuppertal Institute to carry out a material flow analysis based on existing data with a regional reference to the district of Euskirchen as well as an analysis of the economic and industry structure – particularly with regard to the circular economy. These analyses should enable the participating partners of the Ideas Factory and other companies in the district of Euskirchen to use resources and materials more efficiently within the district and establish sustainable cycles. The Wuppertal Institute researchers will derive specific and targeted circular economy options for action from the analyses carried out, which are relevant for the district itself, the municipalities and, in particular, for local companies and other stakeholders.
