Biofuels

Future Perspectives of Second-Generation Biofuels

  • Project no.2316
  • Duration 11/2008 - 01/2010

The goal of the project is to analyse the potential and the risks of the use of second-generation biofuels. The analysis is based on three different perspectives. First, the different biomass sources, production technologies and energetic use types are compared with regard to sustainability criteria. Second, the potential and the consequences of entire value-added-chains of second-generation biofuels is evaluated. Third, sustainability of different future perspectives is evaluated from a total view. The Wuppertal Institute mainly contributes to the indicator development in the context of the "Sustainability Potential Analysis" (SPA). A focus is on integrating the method for global land use accounting for domestic consumption of agricultural goods which was developed at the Wuppertal Institute, as well as on developing a new method for global land use accounting for forestry products. Both methods are applied to account for the global land requirements in agriculture and forestry in Switzerland after scenario results and in comparison with the globally available land per capita.
