Development of a Strategy to Support the Energy Saving Behavior of Users in Office and Administration Buildings

  • Project no.451358
  • Duration 11/2017 - 04/2019

To improve the energy efficiency of offices and office buildings, many technical solutions are developed and applied. However, the actual efficiency and sustainability of these solutions often do not meet the expectations, because the human factor is not considered. This is manly due the fact, that it is not considered how users in office buildings (employees, office owners, office managers etc.) influence the building operations. Everyday behaviour patterns and routines often lead to rebound effects that consume energy and thus cause costs. As a result, the contribution tot he national and international CO2 reduction targets is lower than expected.

Recent studies show that a targeted chance in user behaviour can make a significant contribution to reducing energy consumption in office buildings. Energy-efficient user behavior can reduce energy consumption in public buildings by up to 40 per cent. The objective of this research project is to develop strategies for influencing and optimizing the energy saving behaviour of users and to analyse the practical implementation of possible strategies.
