Risks and Opportunities Linked to the Digital Transformation of Critical Municipal Infrastructures, Using Waste Management as an Example

  • Project no.351901
  • Duration 06/2019 - 11/2019

On behalf of the German Parliament, the Wuppertal Institute and INTECUS GmbH are investigating the interconnections between and the effects of digitalisation on municipal waste management. Despite its crucial function, municipal waste management is a frequently neglected system in health security and hazard prevention. In addition to collecting, transporting, and disposing of waste, operators are increasingly required to make the shift towards circularity, for instance by participating in recycling schemes. For these reasons, the sector provides key municipal infrastructure.

Like all areas of society, municipal waste management, too, is undergoing rapid transformation brought on by digitalisation. This project investigates the extent to which digital technologies can help operators to improve their performance, while also highlighting actions they might need to take as a result of possible threats and dangers.
