Virtual Institute Smart Energy: Small and Medium-sized Enterprises' Perspectives on Smart Digital Technologies

  • Project no.151007
  • Duration 07/2017 - 09/2020

Digitalisation offers both new challenges as well as opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMUs) in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The subproject "Enterprise" within the framework of the Virtual Institute Smart Energy (VISE) investigates innovative smart technology solutions for the improvement of energy efficiency, energy and load management in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The project aims at better understanding of the actual benefits and the usability of smart digital technologies, related business models and services.

More specifically, the Wuppertal Institute examines perspectives of North Rhine Westphalian SMUs on smart digital technologies:

  • What experiences have SMEs already made with different smart energy technologies?
  • How is the topic perceived more generally?
  • What knowledge do the companies have? And what are their particular needs regarding smart energy technologies?
  • Which barriers for adopting smart technologies can be identified?

VISE is an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary consortium, including researchers from the University of Münster, the University of Wuppertal, Forschungszentrum Jülich, ewi Energy Research & Scenarios, the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Wuppertal Institute. The virtual institute is divided into four subprojects with different research focuses. VISE offers an umbrella to integrate the different projects, enabling a holistic perspective on the complex and highly interdependent energy system.
