LesSON II

Implementation Study: Liveable Steets, Places and Neighbourhoods

  • Project no.252529
  • Duration 04/2021 - 02/2022

How can neighbourhood streets be successfully transformed into places worth living in? This question will be investigated in the project for the two pilot streets Neuer Graben (Dortmund) and Lothringer Straße (Gelsenkirchen). The project builds on the results of LesSON I. The images of the future street designs that have been developed there will be further developed and qualified in this project phase.

The project thus has four central aims:

  • Concretising the visions of the future street designs into design planning (based on service phase 3 HOAI) in the two pilot streets.
  • Testing innovative participation and communication formats to activate local residents
  • Continuation of the initiated social debate on the redistribution of public space in the pilot cities
  • Generating knowledge as a blueprint for other cities.

In order to achieve the aims, planning workshops and temporary interventions will be carried out in order to make the added value of liveable streets tangible. In addition, a financing concept will be developed and scientific and communicative support will be implemented.

The Wuppertal Institute is working on the project together with the Emschergenossenschaft and the urban planning office MUST Städtebau GmbH.
