Circularity Optimisation for Plastics: Conception and Pre-Development of a Digital Support System for the Precise Processing and Targeted Recycling of Secondary Plastics into High-Quality Applications

  • Project no.352238
  • Duration 06/2021 - 08/2023

How can the use of recycled plastics be further increased in the future? To answer this question, the project partners of the CYCLOPS project are developing a digital application based on the concept of the digital twin. By means of a digital representation of plastics, its properties can be tracked and the necessary information for high-quality recycling can be provided.

At the start of the project, the requirements for such a twin are defined. The digital twin must digitally store the information necessary for recycling and then make it available to the stakeholders involved, such as recycling companies or plastics converters. Together with data on CO2eq emissions for plastics and processing routes, it should then also be possible to decide automatically on the basis of this information which recycling route offers the greatest ecological benefit for a particular batch of material and is economically viable.
The software developed here will be available as open source code and is to be integrated into a plastics trading platform in the project. Thus, the functionalities can be tested and optimised in real operation.

Project partners are the Kunststoff-Zentrum SKZ, the sustainability software developer GreenDelta and the plastics trading platform cirplus. The Wuppertal Institute is mainly involved in the conception of the digital twin and in the sustainability evaluation.
