The promotion of the circular economy and the departure from the previous predominantly linear production and consumption patterns came to the fore at the political level with the European Commission's 2020 Circular Economy Action Plan and the German government's Resource Efficiency Programme. The building sector is gaining in importance both at European and federal level, as large quantities of raw materials are temporarily stored here over longer periods during the phases of use and accumulate as waste when the buildings are demolished. The project examines the ecological and economic impacts of energy renovation and modernisation measures as opposed to demolition and new construction of buildings.
LEG Immobilien SE as the project client provided a comprehensive data basis on its own refurbishment projects for the ecological and economic assessment. The Wuppertal Institute evaluates the two alternative scenarios "demolition and new construction" versus "refurbishment of the existing building stock" with regard to their material requirements, primary energy consumption and the associated greenhouse gas emissions.
