Future Strategy for the Flood Regions in Rhineland-Palatinate

  • Project no.252839
  • Duration 02/2022 - 08/2022

In the areas in Rhineland-Palatinate particularly affected by the flood disaster in July 2021, the public and private infrastructure has been completely destroyed in some cases. Reconstruction will take many years and will only be possible through a national effort. The federal government has therefore promised massive support for reconstruction and the remodelling of the areas.
The reconstruction must take into account regional characteristics and the creation of resilient infrastructures in order to be better prepared for future natural disasters. In addition, it is important to strengthen the attractiveness of the regions after reconstruction in order to actively counteract possible migration tendencies of the population and to support the economy, which in part depends heavily on tourism.

The aim of the project "ZukunftRLP" is to give greater consideration to future-oriented topics and measures during reconstruction. But how can innovative technologies and projects be newly introduced and applied? This question will be examined from different perspectives that contribute to making the regions mentioned above future-proof, sustainable and attractive. Natural resilience is to be strengthened through land use that is adapted to the location.

The product is a strategy for the reconstruction of the affected flood areas in Rhineland-Palatinate (model region Ahrtal) with the help of innovative technologies. The future strategy is being developed in three project phases:

  • Phase 1: Inventory, analysis and selection of model region.
  • Phase 2: Development of a rough concept for the reconstruction of the selected model region through the use of innovative technologies along defined fields of application, especially in the context of the OZG
  • Phase 3: Strategy formulation and decision preparation
