Resource-Efficient Integration of Multifunctional Laser Based Material Processing Methods in the Process Network for Lightweight Manufacturing

Energy and resource efficiency are of great relevance in industrial manufacturing. Within the RESILIENT project, the efficiency potentials of lightweight construction processes compared to classic manufacturing methods are being investigated. For this purpose, additive (e.g. laser material deposition) and flexible (e.g. laser beam cutting) manufacturing processes are analysed and evaluated with regard to their energy and material efficiency. The combination of different technologies (e.g. multi tool processing) is also of interest here. The investigations are carried out on the basis of selected exemplary components with the aim of developing available technological possibilities towards marketable solutions. To this end, the developed methods will be tested in the production of demonstrator components, possible optimisations of a lightweight construction route using digital and bionic solutions will be identified and the possibilities of transfer to industrial production will be analysed.

The scientists of the Wuppertal Institute are responsible for the resource efficiency evaluations of the process routes in the project consortium. This includes the upstream collection of primary data and the identification, modelling and weighting of sustainability-relevant aspects. An important core element here is the development of a suitable indicator system to control the environmental impacts.

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK) has been funding the project since 1 July 2022 for a period of three years.
