Impact Analysis of the NRW.Bank.Green Bonds

  • Project no.450679, 451104, 451862
  • Duration 12/2015 - 12/2023

Green bonds are bonds whose issue proceeds finance or refinance environmental protection projects. Since 2013, NRW.BANK has regularly issued green bonds focusing on climate mitigation and climate adaptation.

On behalf of NRW.BANK, the Wuppertal Institute carried out several impact analyses of the asset pool of NRW.BANK Green Bonds 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 and plans to evaluate the Green Bonds for 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.
The analyses assessed the contribution of the refinanced shares to climate protection in the areas of eenewable energies, energy efficiency, low carbon transport and buildings.
The effects were calculated and presented in accordance with the recommendations of the Harmonized Framework for Impact Reporting and on the basis of a methodology developed at the Wuppertal Institute.

The cooperation will now be continued in the coming years (starting with the impact analysis of the NRW.BANK.Green Bond 2019). A number of methodological enhancements are planned for this purpose:

  • consideration of different reference systems, particularly in the area of electricity provision,
  • modelling of the climate protection effects of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission for wind power from the north,
  • integration of the recommendations of the Green Bond expert group of the European Commission.
