Cooperation on Climate Adaptation in Wine-Growing Landscapes Using the Example of the Rheingau – Action Competences for Adaptation for Local Actors Using the Concept of Ecosystem Services

  • Project no.451445
  • Duration 01/2019 - 04/2022

The project aims to establish local and inter-municipal cooperation in order to develop concerted action for adaptation to climate change in viticulture, using the example of the Rheingau region. Within the network "KliA-Net_Weinbau" the project participants want to develop and realise effective, future-oriented action and implementation concepts for climate adaptation for the different actors in viticulture and landscape. Further objectives are measures to reduce climate damage under the premise of climate protection and the best possible provision of ecosystem services.

The participants of the network from all relevant areas of the region, such as local authorities, businesses, associations, and technical authorities are to be empowered by the results that were researched and implemented. They will be able to implement practical measures for climate adaptation themselves and, if necessary, to transfer them to other areas – such as fruit growing, agriculture and forest and local recreation areas. The primary aim is to respond to climate change in an ecologically and economically effective way. Therefore, towns and municipalities in the Rheingau are called upon to collaborate and develop projects in the areas of land consolidation, heavy rainfall, and nature and climate protection. In addition, the scientists are working together with winegrowers to develop methods to help viticulture adapt to the changing climate conditions.

Over the next three years, the network is planned to be expanded and established in the Rheingau on a long-term basis.
