Along with other transport related initiatives for rail, public transport, freight, biofuels and aviation, the Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI) has been launched. UEMI aims at phasing out conventional motorised private transport in favour of an increasing share of e-mobility concepts. The target until 2030 is to cover 30 percent of individual motorized transport in cities by electric vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers. To reach this target, the initiative will bring together various actors from the "supply" side, e.g. industry, and the "demand" side, e.g. cities and multilateral development banks.
The overall aim of the initiative is to contribute to significant reductions of CO2 emissions. Additional policy goals can be achieved, such as better air quality, improved energy security and productivity as well as reduced fuel costs.
The SOLUTIONS partners UN-Habitat and Wuppertal Institute in close cooperation with the University of California Davis and the International Energy Agency have developed the concept for the UEMI as part of the SOLUTIONS project and discussed it at a workshop in Barcelona.
