How appropriate and feasible are the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and climate strategies of individual countries? Do they take into account the aspect of fairness? The international ACCLIMATE project aims to answer these questions. The project, led by the Wuppertal Institute, aims to identify opportunities for improving NDCs and long-term climate strategies and, based on this, determine which political measures are necessary for individual countries to achieve their climate goals more effectively. To achieve this, the experts are working together within an international consortium consisting of countries with particularly high and low emissions.
The project was officially launched in March and is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation program under grant agreement no. 101184374. Over the next four years, the researchers will take a look at the industry, buildings, transport, land use and energy supply sectors in the participating countries from Asia, Africa, Europe and America. The resulting improvement strategies will be developed by scientists together with political decision-makers and interest groups at national, international and sectoral level. This way, they aim to bridge the gap between ambitious goals and climate plans that can actually be implemented.
