Evaluating and Amending the Integrated Energy- and Climate Plan of the German-speaking Community of Belgium

  • Project no. 253706
  • Duration 02/2025 - 07/2025

In 2019, Belgium's German-speaking community adopted an Integrated Energy and Climate Plan, setting targets for reducing its CO2 emissions, expanding renewable energies, and increasing energy efficiency according to the EU targets at that time. Furthermore, the Energy and Climate Plan contains measures designed to achieve these targets.

Since 2019, the level of ambition of the European energy and climate targets has been raised as part of the European Green Deal, and several years of experience have now been gained in implementing the measures. This prompted the Ministry of the German-speaking Community to commission an evaluation of the implementation of the Energy and Climate Plan to date and based on the results of the evaluation to develop additional measures. Within the project, researchers from the Wuppertal Institute worked on these tasks. The evaluation included an assessment of the progress made so far in achieving the targets and implementing the measures. The activities also included the preparation and implementation of a workshop at which representatives of the Ministry of the German-speaking Community, the municipalities of the German-speaking Community, and other stakeholders had the opportunity to share their experiences with the implementation of the Energy and Climate Plan and ideas for additional measures with the project team.

The results of the evaluation and the workshop were finally used in the development of additional measures that could complement the Energy and Climate Plan of the German-speaking Community.
