Imple-SDG12

Elaborating Strategies and Contributions to Implement SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) on the National level for Germany" aims at setting up a systematic monitoring for implementing SDG12 on the national level for Germany and thus support the German Environment Ministry as the Leading Department in Developing Positions for National and International Discussions

  • Project no.451401
  • Duration 11/2017 - 11/2020

The project "Development of concrete strategies and contributions for the national implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development for SDG 12 (promotion of sustainable consumption and production patterns) and global 10Year Framework Programme on SCP" seeks to advance the national implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 12. It also supports the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) in developing positions for national and international discussions. The project was carried out by adelphi, the Wuppertal Institute and the Ecologic Institute.

To explore the status quo of the national implementation of SDG 12, the project team, with support from the Wuppertal Institute, developed a methodology for screening activities of different national actors and conducted an initial screening. The results were transferred into a user-friendly online database. The content of the database is incorporated into international reporting processes.
In a further work package led by the Wuppertal Institute, the project team compiled SDG12-relevant indicators for the further development of the national indicator system on sustainable consumption and production. The individual indicators were examined for their suitability for measuring the sub-goals of SDG 12. Based on this analysis key indicators were identified and impulses for the further development of the existing national indicator system were given.

Based on the results, the project team developed recommendations for action to further develop the national implementation of SDG 12. Recommendations include a stronger focus on the concept of "Consumption 4.0," advancing digital consumer communication and education, developing a uniform requirements framework for innovative corporate climate management (e.g., further development of EMAS), strengthening collaboration across value chains, and digitally tracking material flows and transparently communicating product information.
