LCA Carbon2Chem

Review of the Life Cycle Assessment within the Framework of Carbon2Chem

  • Project no.150807, 151991
  • Duration 10/2019 - 05/2020

The aim of the project LCA Carbon2Chem was the independent review of life cycle assessments prepared by Fraunhofer UMSICHT within the first phase of the joint project Carbon2Chem. The subject of these life cycle assessments was the integrated production of primary steel and methanol, which was compared with the classic separate processes for the manufacturing of the two products. The central question here was whether integrated production can reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to the separate processes.

The Wuppertal Institute generally assessed the basic methodological approach of this ecological evaluation in the Carbon2Chem project. For this purpose, the project classified the relevance of the object of investigation for climate protection and discussed the methodology used and the framing of the life cycle assessments. Following the review, which was closely based on existing LCA's, the researchers pointed out additional possible in-depth topics for future LCA's in the field of climate-neutral steel production as well as the coupling of steel production and chemical industry.
