With the official ground-breaking ceremony on 19 May, the construction phase of the Solar Decathlon has begun. For fourteen days, the international collegiate teams have time to build their climate-friendly houses in Wuppertal, Germany. From 10 to 26 June, visitors can explore the best ideas for sustainable cities.
The Solar Decathlon is the world's largest university Olympics for sustainable building and living. This year, the international competition will take place in Germany for the first time. Hundreds of international students will present inspiring examples of beautiful, environmentally friendly and affordable buildings in Wuppertal from 10 to 26 June. The international teams arrived in Wuppertal on 19 May. The official ground-breaking ceremony for the Solar Campus was kicked off with a parade of over 300 students through the city centre. Afterwards, the University of Wuppertal organisers and representatives of the project partners welcomed the participants to the venue. From Friday, 20 May, the students will work on the construction site every day. Within a fortnight, they will build their sixteen prototypes with up to 110 square metres of living space for the big event in June.
About the Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22
The Solar Decathlon is the world's largest collegiate competition for sustainable building and living. It has been inspiring millions of people with innovative buildings and high-profile events for twenty years. With the Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22 (SDE 21/22) in Wuppertal, the competition will take place in Germany for the first time. The SDE 21/22 is organised and scientifically accompanied by the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Wuppertal. Project partners are the Wuppertal Institute, Utopiastadt gGmbH, Neue Effizienz GmbH, WSW Wuppertaler Stadtwerke GmbH and the City of Wuppertal. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action abbreviated BMWK.
