Sustainable Hamburg

  • Project no.1256
  • Duration 12/2009 - 12/2010

The Zukunftsrat Hamburg, the BUND Hamburg (Friends of the Earth Hamburg), the Eine-Welt-Netzwerk (One world network), the EED (Church Development Service), The Diakonisches Werk Hamburg and the North Elbian Evangelical Church commissioned the Wuppertal Institute with the study "Sustainable Hamburg". The aim of this study is to concretise the findings of the study "Sustainable Germany in a Globalised World" published in 2008 for the city of Hamburg and to enrich the ongoing discussion by developing a sustainability strategy for Hamburg.
The necessary radical policy change demanded in the extensive former study cannot only be set up on a national or international level. In fact, the general development concepts, the base lines of the study "Sustainable Germany" can rather be experienced and seen when locally implemented in cities and communities. One outcome here is that the interests of the future generations are too often ignored when trying to satisfy the needs of the present generations. Everywhere activities like building additional airport runways, new road construction, soil sealing, new housing construction, industrial parks and fossil power plants are realised; these measures are generally put through by means of growth and employment arguments. The Hamburg study deals with these problems based on the Hanseatic City.
It was published as a book in autumn 2010 by the publishing house Dölling and Galitz.
