Recommendations for Action of the Expert Report by the German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU)

  • Project no.2235
  • Duration 12/2006 - 12/2007

In July 2005, the German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU) published its expert report on "environment and road transport - high mobility, environmentally compatible transport". In the report the SRU stressed the fact that consequentional damage caused by road transport is unacceptably high for health and the environment, and that concrete action has to be undertaken in order to tackle this problem. Thus, the SRU gave a number of specific recommendations, such as a reform of the German transport planning system.
A political or public response to the expert report and its recommendations was hardly recognised.
The aim of this project is to make these recommendations more transparent and, thus, initiate concrete changes in the current spatial and transport planning system.
In two expert workshops the proposed paradigm shift in transport planning shall be discussed and evaluated. Furthermore, the suggested strategies shall be analysed with regard to their active implementation options. Based on this, concrete strategic recommendations for action shall be formulated and addressed to the German Federal Government.
