The German-Greek research project "HyPathGR" aims to strengthen the economic performance and geopolitical stability of the European Union. To this end, the project team analyses Greece’s potential for generating renewable energies as well as the hydrogen that can be produced from them, both for domestic use and for export. As part of this, the researchers determine the quantities of green hydrogen that Greece could export to the EU and Germany via existing pipeline systems. The project team takes systemic effects into account, and classifies and evaluates both current and future technical and regulatory framework conditions in order to assess practical feasibility.
The project is conducted in collaboration with the research partners DBI Gas- und Umwelttechnik, WMG Sustainable Innovation, and Centre for Research & Technology Hellas CERTH. The Wuppertal Institute supports the analysis of potentials and transport options, evaluates the technical and regulatory framework conditions for the implementation of exports and contributes to the development of policy scenarios. Methodologically, the project team applies a mix of techno-economic analyses, modelling, regulatory and policy analyses, scenario development, and stakeholder consultations.
The HyPathGR project covers the following subgoals:
