Product Innovations Contributing to an Increase in Resource Efficiency: Introducing Ambitious Minimum Energy Performance Standards in the Sense of a EU Top Runner Approach into the Process of Developing Implementing Measures of the Ecodesign Directive

  • Project no.1264
  • Duration 10/2009 - 12/2012

How can implementing measures for energy-related products in the context of the European Ecodesign Directive be designed in such a way that ecodesign aspects are comprehensively considered and ambitious requirements regarding design are set? This is the central question of a project, in which the Wuppertal Institute functions as subcontractor of Ökopol GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA). The German Ministry for Environment (BMU) and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) are actively involved in the processes and institutions on EU level and in Germany for the implementation of the Ecodesign Directive. By accompanying preparatory studies, short papers and stakeholder workshops they are scientifically supported by this project, for example by means of:

  • Assessment and expert's reports regarding selected eco-design preparatory studies for different product groups
  • Evaluation and deduction of recommendations
  • Elaboration of proposals for expert's reports
  • Short expertises regarding drafts of implementation measures

The Wuppertal Institute works on the product group refrigerators and freezers (ENTR 1), transformers (ENTR 2) and industrial and laboratory furnaces (ENTR 4).
