National Bicycle Traffic Plan - Competition "Bicycle-Friendly Housing Industry - Accompanying Research"

  • Project no.3270
  • Duration 09/2013 - 08/2015

Creating a bicycle-friendly atmosphere and the motivation to increasingly use the bike requires the participation of various groups of actors. A relevant group that has not been broadly involved so far is the housing industry: in the course of building, operating and managing appartments, housing companies have many options to facilitate increased bicycle use. In order to realise this potential, to create awareness among actors in the housing sector and motivate them to implement concrete measures, the competition "Bicycle-friendly housing industry" was launched. In this competition, companies in the housing industry are asked to present their activities for promoting bicycle use. Scientific case studies will be carried out for four selected applicants that have successfully implemented a broad set of measures in this context. The case studies will focus on strengths and weaknesses of the implemented measures, their benefits will be analysed and recommendations will be given for their further development. The aim is to encourage the participating companies to continue their efforts and to motivate others to adopt those measures that have been scientifically proven to be useful. The competition includes two phases. The website www.fahrrad-fit.de can be used to apply online and it will further be used to present the good practice examples selected in the competition. Finally, a conference including the award ceremony offers the opportunity for everyone who is interested to learn more about the good practice examples. These will also be documented, in order to serve as a basis for imitation by others. The project as a whole is carried out by B.A.U.M. Consult GmbH and B.A.U.M. e.V.. The Wuppertal Institute is responsible for scientifically accompanying the competition, including the development of competition criteria and the case study analyses.
