MOST RegioKöln

Mobility Stations as Intermodal Interfaces in the Urban Region of Cologne

EFRE
  • Project no.251827
  • Duration 09/2019 - 09/2022

The aim of the project is to investigate how mobility stations (MoSt) can successfully be rolled out in order to strengthen intermodality in regional transport. This is a trans-disciplinary approach. The project takes place in the urban region of Cologne. Around one million people live in Cologne and one million in the surrounding area. Daily commuting – often by car – causes considerable traffic and environmental problems.
Mobility stations serve as interfaces to combine environmentally friendly transport modes on intermodal trip chains so that traffic shifts from private cars to environmentally friendly transport modes (trains and busses, walking and cycling, sharing systems) are facilitated. A regional network of mobility stations shall be established and qualitative elements shall upgrade existing ones. Furthermore, the network of mobility stations shall expand regionally and be communicated user-friendly.

On the basis of regional preliminary work, the researches will examine which strategies are successful in order to roll out an integrated network of smart equipped mobility stations in the region of Cologne. Moreover, they will evaluate which factors promote or inhibit this intention and how obstacles can be removed. During the project, the planning and implementation of about eight mobility stations will be supported and the resulting experiences will be scientifically evaluated. In summary, new empirical knowledge of impacts, success factors and obstacles shall be gained in the case of Cologne. These findings will also be prepared for the transfer to other regions.

The Wuppertal Institute coordinates this project, which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the State of North Rhine-Westfalia.
