KWK-Pot-NRW

Potential Study on Combined Heat and Power (CHP) in North Rhine-Westphalia

  • Project no.151926
  • Duration 10/2019 - 02/2021

The aim of the project "KWK-Pot-NRW" is first of all to record and spatially locate the combined heat and power (CHP) plant stock and the heating networks in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). This current status forms the basis for the determination of CHP potentials in three scenarios for the period under consideration up to 2050. To this end, the researchers assess the opportunities, obstacles and prospects for CHP in the context of the energy system transformation process. In combination with energy policy framework conditions, they can thus derive target systems that meet the different CO2 reduction requirements in the scenarios. The calculation of the CHP potential is carried out on a nationwide basis by clustering the federal state. High-resolution heat demand maps of NRW are available for the determination of the potential, which are to be further improved within the project. An intensive integration of the expertise of relevant stakeholders - from energy and gas suppliers, associations and industry via planners and consultants, research and manufacturers – is ensured by two workshops on CHP in general supply and CHP in industry and by regular meetings with an advisory group. After the end of the project, the State Agency for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection NRW (LANUV) will make the project results and their foundations available to the interested public in the Energy Atlas NRW.

In the project, the Wuppertal Institute is particularly working on the identification of heat demand (status quo and update) with a focus on the industrial sector. In this context, an industrial cogeneration workshop is planned. In addition, the scientists analyse the chances and obstacles of CHP and the role of synthetic fuels in scenarios for NRW under the framework of an ambitious climate protection policy.
