In the GrInstRegio-study, the researchers develop a holistic and universal definition of a "green industrial region" for an aspired ideal and target state in the future. The definition consists of a qualitative mission statement alongside seven "green action fields" that is concretised by a set of 35 operationalised and measurable indicators and existing targets or target proposals.
In the second step, the researchers further analyse seven of the 35 indicators (one indicator per action field) for the Ruhr Metropolitan Region: 1. Greenhouse emissions, 2. Renewable energies, 3. modal split in passenger transport, 4. number of employees in the environmental protection industries, 5. Air quality (nitrogen dioxide), 6. water quality of running waters and 7. share of green and recreation areas. For these seven core indicators, the researchers

• analyse how the Ruhr Metropolitan Region has developed and where it stands today,
• estimate the Ruhr Area specific transformation and forerunner potentials and
• develop key measures, with which the Ruhr Metropolitan Region can unfold relevant transformation potentials on its way to a green industrial region ("think big").

In a summarising outlook section, the researches discuss the results of the study in a wider societal context regarding the necessity for accelerated change towards sustainability. The study highlights central characteristics and mentalities of the Ruhr Metropolitan Region that can significantly contribute to a successful fundamental course change towards a "green industrial region".
