With the Pina Bausch Centre, a new art and cultural institution for the 21st century is to be created in Wuppertal – international, interdisciplinary, diverse and based on the outstanding artistic heritage. The dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch (1940–2009) is considered a pioneer of modern dance theatre and one of the most influential choreographers and artists of the 20th century. Her artistic courage is groundbreaking.
The Pina Bausch Zentrum is to become a contemporary and an all-day open space with high sustainability standards, inviting everyone to visit and participate. In June 2023, the New York architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro won the first place in the architectural competition and the building itself is also intended to become a best-practice example in terms of sustainability.
Until the opening of the Pina Bausch Zentrum, the team of the project "The Pina Bausch Centre as a Holistic Sustainable Approach" is working together with the Wuppertal Institute and the Szenografie-Bund to integrate sustainability from the very beginning into the statutes, resources, economy, personnel and content orientation of the emerging centre.
Within the project, three activities will be realised in cooperation with the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch/Pina Bausch Zentrum and the Wuppertal Institute: Four interdisciplinary workshops organised by the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, together with the Szenografie-Bund and the Wuppertal Institute, will focus on sustainability in stage design, costume design and space design under the title "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". Based on artistic practice, the workshops will deal in particular with material selection and storage, circular economy, material borrowing and new materials as well as scenographic working methods. In addition, international initiatives, producers and artists are invited to participate in "FRAGILE", an annual festival for young dance-music-theatre, via an open call. The aim is to create transdisciplinary symbioses of art and ecology. Furthermore, based on the Bauhaus idea of the Bauhütte, the "FABRICA" Tanzbauhütte will be established as a place for workshops, lectures, debates and exchange on the topic of sustainability and art in Wuppertal.
The "Green Culture Lab Wuppertal", which is also planned in cooperation with the Wuppertal Institute, will link urban institutions, initiatives, cultural actors and relevant courses of study and use swarm intelligence to develop joint visions of the future for the city and beyond.
The project is funded by the Zero programme of the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation). Funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (Beauftragte der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien).
