The JUSTPATH project aims to significantly strengthen in-country climate mitigation modelling capacities in developing and emerging economies. It will generate robust scientific analyses to support the development and implementation of more ambitious national climate action, particularly Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Long-Term Low Greenhouse Gas Emission Development Strategies (LT-LEDS). A key focus is on improving the understanding of socio-economic impacts of mitigation actions and ensuring a Just Transition. The project will contribute directly to international climate processes, most notably the Global Stocktake (GST) under the Paris Agreement.
The Wuppertal Institute will leverage its expertise in UNFCCC negotiations and the GST: specifically, the researchers will support the translation of the outcomes of the first GST into actionable insights at the domestic level. Furthermore, the Institute will lead efforts in enhancing the understanding of Just Transition policies and regulations for ambitious domestic climate action, drawing on its experience with policy processes linked to Just Transition in developing countries and global processes, including a focus on coal regions.
