Analysis of Pledges of Emerging Economies: Assumptions, Potentials, Implementation

  • Project no.1281
  • Duration 11/2011 - 11/2013

The integration of emerging economies into the climate regime is one of the largest challenges in climate diplomacy. In this context, the project aims to provide analysis that supports the realistic evaluation of the pledges from the most important emerging economies (Brazil, China, India, Mexico, South Africa and South Korea) relative to their "business-as-usual" development. This analysis will be put into the context of the feasibility of such reductions and in the global context of the agreed objective to limit temperature increase to 2 degrees C.

Additionally, the project will provide policy analysis on the status and process of development of "low carbon development strategies" and "nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs)" in the six countries.

A final aspect of the analysis is the status and level of "monitoring, reporting and verification" (MRV) of NAMAs in these countries.
