Strategic Assessment of the Perspectives of Synthetic Biofuels in North Rhine-Westphalia

  • Project no.2120
  • Duration 10/2005 - 03/2006

In the coming years, the demand of sustainable fuels and for a diversification of the energy supply in the transportation sector will constantly increase. Synthetic biofuels (bio-synfuels) are "designer-fuels", produced via gasification of solid biomass, e.g. wood and other solid residues, and following synthesis of the produced gas to a liquid fuel (biomass-to-liquid BTL). Therefore, they offer the chance to open up new energy resources and climate-protection potentials, especially for the transportation sector.
Technologies for the supply of sustainable fuels will in future thus gain importance, especially from the perspective of "Europe's Energy State No.1" of North Rhine-Westphalia. This holds with regard to the climate friendly supply of fuel demand, the enhanced utilisation of domestic renewable energy resources, as for the positioning of NRW industry and research players in future technology fields.
In the framework of an overall strategy for the introduction of alternative fuels in North Rhine-Westphalia it is the aim of the project to examine

  • the contribution to climate and environmental protection as well as the substitution of fossil energy resources that can be expected for NRW by the implementation of the bio-synfuel options,
  • the potential of the bio-synfuel technology for using the domestic biomass resources in the most effective and sustainable way,
  • the technology and industry political impacts that can be expected for North Rhine-Westphalia.

The study is commissioned by the Ministry for Economics and Energy in North Rhine-Westphalia and it is conducted in close interaction with the Competence Network "Fuels for the Future" of the State Initiative on Future Energies.
