AISS

Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Societies

  • Project no.351947
  • Duration 02/2020 - 11/2020

The consortium characterizes the nature and extent of artificial intelligence (AI) phenomena that jointly drive environmental and social outcomes. The diversity of AI applications and rebound effects mean that AI's consequences for energy, material, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission flows at the societal level are not obvious. The team explores where, how, and why AI supports or obstructs the sustainability transition.

The planning phase identifies the most salient environmental implications of the AI-induced transformation of labor markets, the nature of work, and lifestyles. It identifies the most salient distributional implications and labor market repercussions of AI applications designed to contribute to the conservation of energy and materials in systems of consumption and production. This exploratory research is a necessary first step towards offering policy solutions that address new AI-specific tradeoffs between ecological and social sustainability and exploiting potential synergies emerging along these lines.
