TransIS

Transformation of Regional Infrastructures in Structural Change

  • Project no.152655
  • Duration 09/2021 - 09/2024

The project "Transformation of regional infrastructures for a socio-ecological structural change and sustainable spatial development" – TransIS for short – is concerned with regional infrastructures in the context of ecological structural change. The aim is to investigate the contribution that can be made by designing and innovatively networking of regional infrastructures based on sustainability criteria can make for a socially-ecological structural change and what impulses for a sustainable regional development can come from it.

The infrastructure systems in cities and regions such as energy and drinking water supply, sewage disposal, mobility and information and communication technologies/ICT are of fundamental importance for social and economic developments. They are used to distribute and direct enormous flows of energy, water, information and goods. A key to overcoming societal challenges therefore lies in the way in which infrastructures are planned and designed.

In coordination with the Umweltbundesamt as client, concrete recommendations for infrastructural approaches to sustainable structural change and for future funding policies are to be developed in participatory processes with actors from the three mining areas. The project is being carried out under the leadership of the German Institute for Urbanistic Affairs (Difu) together with the Brandenburg Technical University (BTU) Cottbus Senftenberg, the Ecologic Institute and the Wuppertal Institute.

The scientist of the Wuppertal Institute conducts interviews with stakeholders in the Rhenish mining area and, in cooperation with them, develops scenarios for socio-ecological structural change and target images for possible infrastructure developments.
