Since its foundation, the Wuppertal Institute has been eager to make sustainability and environmental protection vital aspects of the building and the daily working routine of its employees.
Since 2010, the Sustainability Management has initiated and coordinated many activities in the field of sustainability. The sustainability managers have systematically taken stock of the status quo and continuously taken action in the central fields of energy, mobility and procurement. Furthermore, the sustainability management also supervises the internal sustainability communication, so as to broadly integrate the staff and their expertise into sustainability activities. The exchange of experience on sustainability management with other institutions of the Ecornet and the ZNHOCH3 Network is also part of their work.
The Wuppertal Institute has been a member of the sponsorship association of the B.A.U.M. since December 2017 and ensures the implementation of the B.A.U.M. code for sustainable management.
As part of sustainability monitoring, regular reports are published in which the progress in ecological, social and economic sustainability is presented. A recent milestone was the Sustainability Report 2021, which was designed as an interactive web application (only in German) for the first time, giving interested readers entertaining insights into the Wuppertal Institute's sustainability management. The Sustainability Report was updated in 2023 with the publication of the Indicator Report (also only in German).
The Wuppertal Institute was awarded with the German Sustainability Award 2024 in the "Research and Development" category for its commitment and exemplary contributions to the transformation. The prize has been awarded since 2008 in close cooperation with the German government and other partners.
