Plausibility of Climate Protection Scenarios Taking into Account Climate Change and Adaptation – Evaluation of Scenario Studies and Derivation of a Research Agenda

  • Project no. 153653
  • Duration 04/2025 - 10/2026

Climate protection scenarios provide an important basis for energy and climate policy frameworks, business decisions, as well as research and development activities. It is to be expected that climate change, which is set to progress in the coming years and decades, will have significant consequences for the energy system. However, the influence of climate change impacts is hardly taken into account in the scenarios. Against this background, the ScenClimPact project team systematically analyses where and in what form progressing climate change influences the central transformation strategies of the scenarios and to what extent this could limit the scenarios’ plausibility in a significant way. In addition, the researchers also examine interdependencies between climate protection and climate adaptation. The project aims to systematically record the influence of climate change, to understand its basic features and to reliably assess its relevance. The central project result is the derivation of a research agenda that points out the need for future research into the plausibility of climate protection scenarios against the backdrop of advancing climate change.
